Drive-by egging that injured boy not isolated incident

- SCOTT BROWN

A drive-by egging that put a North Vancouver teen in hospital may have been the work of a serial egger or eggers.

Matthys van Bylandt, 13, suffered a serious eye injury on Monday night when he was pelted in the face by an egg thrown from a moving vehicle.

“The injuries received from the egg breaking into the eye are very serious,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong of the North Vancouver RCMP.

Photos released Friday by his family show the damage the egg did to van Bylandt’s eye, which was left bloody and swollen shut following the attack.

The teen was treated at hospital and later put on full bed rest in hopes he can avoid permanent eye damage.

De Jong says RCMP have received reports of four other similar incidents since Aug. 10, including one near Sutherland Secondary on Thursday in which a 14-yearold boy dodged a barrage of eggs thrown at him by several people from inside a vehicle.

Three separate eggings were reported near Canyon elementary school on Aug. 10, 11 and 20.

De Jong says the suspect vehicle in each case has been described as a black compact SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
