Les Amis du Fromage marks 30th

- ANTHONY GISMONDI

Les Amis du Fromage is turning 30 this year, having grown from a tiny storefront in Point Grey to a two-store, 15-employee enterprise and a multiple award-winning cheese purveyor.

To celebrate, the store is offering a chance to win a cheese tasting for 30 people. From Sept. 1 to Oct. 31, you can enter when you make a purchase of $30 or more at Les Amis du Fromage (1752 West 2nd Ave. or 843 East Hastings). Be sure to read the full contest terms and conditions at buycheese. com before entering.

In the final instalment of Cibo Trattoria’s Summer Wine Dinner Series on Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m., guests will sip some of the coolest grapes from one of Italy’s hottest winemaking regions. Mark Taylor will showcase an array of Southern Italian wines ranging from Negroamaro and Aglianico, to Falanghina and Greco di Tufo. Wines will be matched to seasonal regional dishes.

Tickets are $89 per person, plus taxes and gratuity at cibotrattoria.com.

B.C. WINE OF THE WEEK

Meyer Family Vineyards Pinot Noir Reimer Vineyard 2015, Okanagan Valley $40 | 90/100

UPC: 00808755008155 East Kelowna is home to this juicy, spicy Pinot Noir that has mostly survived the heat of 2015. The nose is a mix of ripe black cherries sprinkled with mineral notes and just the right amount of toasted oak. There is a touch of that earthy, sour cherry, Oregon thing going on in the back end with enough acidity to make it all work. Drink all fall with smoked chicken, grilled salmon, or mushroom risotto.

WINE FOR THE CELLAR

Feather Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States $65 | 95/100

UPC: 808755003860 I’m in awe of this 2014 Feather, surely one of the best Cabernets made in Washington to date. Randy Dunn is the maestro, and he has found his Washington orchestra in the Columbia Valley. The king of Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, is producing some of the finest silkiest tannins we have tasted in Washington. A warm year bolstered by cool nights has left enough acidity to counter the spice and fruit. This is sophisticated wine you can cellar for a decade and beyond, or enjoy right now.
