THE B.C. CHILDREN’S AND B.C. WOMEN’S HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Project design began in 2010 with fixed costs of $676 million to $678 million. Teck Resources contributed $25 million to the fundraising campaign by B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation, the largest gift ever received by B.C. Children’s. Naming rights were thus granted to the corporate giant. About 80,000 donors contributed $200 million toward the hospital redevelopment project; the balance is funded by taxpayers.

Phase 1, 2010-14: Construction of the clinical support building, additional space for the UBC Faculty of Medicine and the Djavad Mowafaghian Child Care Centre, which has 49 daycare spaces, primarily for children of hospital staff.

Phase 2, 2014-17: Construction of the Teck Acute Care Centre. It officially opens on Oct. 29 as the core of B.C. Children’s Hospital, though it includes some B.C. Women’s Hospital programs, such as the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Renovations also made to the Urgent Care Centre at the adjoining B.C. Women’s Hospital.

Phase 3, 2018-20: Relocation of Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children, which specializes in rehabilitation, from Slocan Street to the Oak Street campus and 10 more rooms for maternity care at B.C. Women’s. The former neonatal intensive care unit and former children’s hospital emergency department will be renovated to make way for Sunny Hill patients.
