Sarah Richardson, Masters of Flip duo among highlights at Fall Home Show
Those looking for some practical advice on home design and renovation or just a little creative inspiration will want to make a note that the Vancouver Fall Home Show is returning to the Vancouver Convention Centre West from Oct. 26 to 29, for its 34th year.
Alongside the 325 “trusted brands and local companies” exhibiting at the event — previously called the Vancouver Home + Design Show — will be presentations by design stars that include Sarah Richardson, colour bomb Tiffany Pratt, and Kortney and Dave Wilson of HGTV’s Masters of Flip.
“I’m definitely excited about the lineup of talent we’ve got coming to the Fall Home Show this year,” says show director Tyson Kidd.
“Kortney and David are just such a wonderful couple, such great energy, very nice, friendly, caring, loving people, and that energy they bring to the show is really going to spill into the audience.”
Richardson last presented at the show in 2008, says Kidd, and they’re thrilled to have her back.
“She is such a well-known name in the industry,” says Kidd. “She’s got a new show on HGTV, Sarah Off The Grid, so we’re just over the moon to have her come back to our show, and visit with our attendees for a couple of hours.
“I think Sarah is a very, very versatile designer, and she can do anything from attainable style, and design, which our shows are known for, to very high-end, exquisitely elaborate design.”
One of the show features that has really developed into something special over the past few years, says Kidd, is the Ask A Designer studio, where established interior designers, partnered with interior design students from BCIT, offer free 10-minute consultations to showgoers who are looking for interior design advice. This feature is in support of Kids Help Phone, Kidd says.
“The Ask A Designer feature, for me,” says Kidd, “is kind of our give back to the community, where we’re really trying to help out as much as we can in the new design community, as well with the Kids Help Phone side of things.”
Jamie Banfield, of Jamie Banfield Design, will be returning to the show with his Double Take feature, in which he’ll create two living room settings, side by side, one designed on a budget and the other more high end.
The idea, he says, is to create the same feel, but with dramatically different budgets. An example of this, he says, is in the highend room they’re using an original painting from a local artist, whereas in the budget-friendly living room, they’ll use prints in Ikea frames.
“They don’t have to be identical, but feel the same,” he says. “And playing around with different ways of making a room feel luxurious on a budget.”
Achieving a sense of luxury and richness is something interior designers seem to be striving for at the moment, and on this Banfield says: “For a while, we were very clean, and contemporary, whites and grey, and I think luxury means many different things for many different people, but for me, it’s craftsmanship.”
Banfield will also be presenting on the Main Stage at the show, sharing his insights on how to achieve luxurious interiors on a budget through “having some fun with colour, and your personality,” and where best to spend your money when renovating.
“Spaces you can make luxurious easily are powder rooms or a master bedroom or dining room,” he says.
“We’re talking about innovation in kitchen, and bath. The overall theme is a DIY project, where you save money, but not make it look like you’ve saved money, along with where to invest, how to invest, and if you’re going to put it in personality, where to put it in personality.”
