Devils, Schneider burning bright to start the season
The Vancouver Canucks’ homestand continues tonight with former Canucks netminder Cory Schneider leading a much-improved New Jersey squad into Rogers Arena.
THE BIG MATCHUP
Hischier vs. Sutter
Star first-rounder Nico Hischier has had Taylor Hall on his wing to start the season and the Devils are getting results. Brandon Sutter keeps getting tough assignments and while his line’s production has suffered, there are still six forwards who are giving up more shots per game than him. At the same time, there’s still too many shots against from good spots, so watch out.
FIVE KEYS TO THE GAME 1. Boeser returns
Rookie winger Brock Boeser missed Monday’s 2-1 loss to Dallas with a foot bruise. After practice on Tuesday, he sounded like he was ready to return against the Devils. The Canucks need his shot.
2. Dealing with the Devils
New Jersey has lost just twice on the season. A lot of that has to do with the Devils’ surprisingly potent attack: they’re averaging 3.8 goals per game. They’ve been getting goals from throughout the lineup: 15 skaters have potted a goal, led by Brian Gibbons’ five.
3. Bulldog making them stand up
Alex Biega isn’t the biggest, nor is he the best defenceman on the team. But Monday he was involved and almost exclusively in a good way. His confident play is a reflection of the attitude the Canucks are bringing to the rink right now. There is definitely some luck involved, but they’re getting results.
4. Gagner’s best spot
Sam Gagner got his first goal of the season Monday and now clearly feels less weight on his shoulders. But with Boeser’s return, where does he slot in the lineup? Does he go back to the Alex Burmistrov/ Thomas Vanek line or might he get more Sedin time?
5. Schneider returns
The goalie is never not the story, so while we debate Jacob Markstrom versus Anders Nilsson, it’s somewhat ironic Schneider is back in town. The Devils goalie knows Canucks crease debates well; in New Jersey, he’s been mostly a league leader. Last year was a struggle (.908 save percentage) and this year has started slowly, too (.909). But you know he’ll be up for this one.
