Potted flowers, a small electronic candle and a pair of photos on a sheet of paper that read “In Loving Memory” were the only visible reminders Sunday of the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl at a Burnaby highrise earlier this weekend.

It was on Saturday afternoon that the girl — identified by the memorial only as “Audrey” — died after a fall from high in one of the Timberlea Towers at 3771 Bartlett Court in the Sullivan Heights area.

At the corner of every floor in the building is a balcony with a waist-high concrete and metal railing. On the sides of the building are sliding windows in every unit. It is unclear which the child fell from.

A resident of the building said it was the apartment manager who found the little girl after the fall.

The manager was walking her dog when the child struck the ground not far away from her.

The resident said the little girl was visually impaired and may have fallen out of her bedroom window on the 22nd floor of the building.

“She was a pretty little girl. I remember her dad helping her find the right button on the elevator one day,” the resident said. “We’re really sad here. It’s unbelievable.”

Investigators are now looking for anyone who may have witnessed the fall, which occurred while a parent was at home, according to Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Dale Carr.
