The VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation Millionaire Lottery prize homes just keep raising the bar when it comes to setting the standard for what a West Coast dream residence is all about.

We recently visited the Elgin Park property in South Surrey and were wowed. This six-bedroom house is worth over $3.3 million, has magazine-worthy furnishings valued at $140,000, and cuts an elegant presence in the neighbourhood.

The home has high ceilings, a large landscaped back yard with a Zen-esque water feature, and rooms dedicated to everything a modern family would want. The colour palette throughout is relaxing and airy in creamy whites, taupe and the occasional suggestion of colour. Furniture and accessories were provided by Valley Direct Furniture in Langley, and window coverings by Shelby Snow and Budget Blinds of South Surrey-White Rock. Interior design and staging was by Sandra Hurtley from Positive Space Staging + Design.

Builder Vic Sanghera from Red Tree Creative Homes achieved maximum impact by placing the dining room near the front door. The kitchen is any cook’s dream, with top-of-the-line Jenn-Air appliances and a separate spice kitchen ideal for keeping food aromas out of the open-concept entertaining space. White, airy and clean seem to be the trend in modern kitchens and this home has that covered in a lovely way.

“I always find myself being more of a symmetrical person. I love the look and feel of balance,” says interior designer Hurtley when asked about the open-concept living room. She placed two identical sofas in ivory facing each other with a mixed-material coffee table and an oversized club chair between them.

Other jaw-dropping features? A temperature-controlled walkin wine room holds 96 bottles. A library with 20-foot ceilings has built-in shelving complete with a rolling library rail ladder. Two basement rooms are dedicated to health and wellness, one as a yoga room and the other a gym. A stone feature wall in the hallway brings the outdoors inside, and the media room is like a private screening room.

Since every lottery home comes complete with the hottest décor trends around, here are some we loved.

TAUPE

This new neutral has taken over in everything from floor coverings to furniture to paint. This not-brown, not-grey hue plays beautifully with pretty much any colour scheme. From earthy soft neutrals to bold brights, taupe holds its own. In this home, we saw it in the hardwood floors, in bedroom furniture, leather sofas, everywhere.

TILES

Move over white subway tiles. Interesting tiling is showing up as feature floors (in the walk-in wine fridge) and as backsplashes in the rec room bar — but the kicker here is the tiles have an optical illusion element that sets them apart.

METALLICS

Think warm, glamorous golds in draperies, throw pillows, bedding and objets.

COLOUR POPS: BURNT ORANGE

Burnt orange seems to have made a comeback, and appears as accent cushions, throws and a feature wall in the hallway. Says Hartley: “Orange is always a warm, cosy colour to work with.”
