Delays will continue as ‘extensive’ repairs needed on Highway 99

- PATRICK JOHNSTON pjohnston@postmedia.com

Drivers who use Highway 99 through South Surrey should expect major delays to continue into the new year. Provincial officials say the 152nd Street highway overpass requires “extensive” repairs after it was struck by an over-height semi-truck Monday morning.

The crash closed the highway to northbound traffic — and traffic in both directions on the overpass itself — for the rest of the day as engineers assessed the damage.

Tuesday morning, after the overpass was stabilized, one northbound lane was reopened; a single southbound lane on 152nd is now open as well. Officials say that will remain the case until further notice.

In a news release, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said “motorists are advised to expect delays, and should plan an alternate route.”

The ministry says coming up with a plan for the repairs is a top priority, including design, cost and timelines.

A further update on the project is expected in January.
