VALENTINE’S DAY DATE MOVIE: LA LA LAND

A kind of love letter to Hollywood filmmaking and the great sprawl of Los Angeles, director Damien Chazelle’s film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won six Oscars at the 2017 Academy Awards — including the one it didn’t win, which went to a far better film, director Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight (which, conveniently, screens after at 6 p.m.). But what’s more romantic than being the sympathetic loser in a popularity contest? Don’t they always seem to be the happiest characters?
