WINE FOR THE CELLAR

-

Palacio del Burgo Reserva 2010, Rioja Alavesa, Rioja, Spain $29.99 | 89/100

UPC: 8437002513665

From a 1950s co-operative to an estate in 1987, Palacio del Burgo farms some 200 hectares, 90 per cent of which are red grapes in the Baja. In 2010 the blend is 85/10/5 Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo (or Carignan). Older vines, more than 30 years, give the wine a silky sheen and fine texture. This is modern Rioja, with clean berries dominating on the nose, lots of red fruit and very fresh acidity. Juicy mineral notes are a pleasant surprise for the price and the origin. Lamb chops anyone? Cellar two more years and serve as a 10-year-old.
