JAYS HONOUR SHOOTING VICTIMS
Both the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies wore caps with the initials SD on the front during the warm-up before their Grapefruit League game Friday to honour the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting Feb. 14.
A former student entered the Parkland, Fla., school and killed 17 people, both students and teachers, injuring another 15, making it one of the world’s deadliest school massacres.
“It’s sad as can be,” Jays manager John Gibbons said. “The problem in our country is it’s happening too often and something needs to be done. This puts the spotlight on the tragedy and honours the victims and their families, which is a great thing.”
Jays starter Joe Biagini hoped wearing the caps would inspire someone, or some group, to take action to prevent such shootings.
