Cat abducted, bound and stuffed in dumpster

- PATRICK JOHNSTON

A cat was left to die after being bound by zip-ties, stuffed inside a box and dropped into a dumpster in Pouce Coupe and the B.C. SPCA wants to find out who did it.

According to a news release from the SPCA, the cat — who they know is named Rosie because she has a tattoo and microchip — was found at about 11:30 p.m. Monday in a dumpster outside the Hillcrest Motel.

A man who was out collecting bottles heard “a soft meowing coming from underneath the piles of garbage,” Wendy Davies, manager of the B.C. SPCA’s South Peace Branch, said Wednesday. “He dug under the piles of garbage and discovered the cat inside a taped box with her limbs zip-tied together.”

He freed the cat and then cared for her overnight. He took her to the SPCA in Dawson Creek the next morning.

“We immediately took the cat to the vet and thankfully she has no lasting injuries or medical concerns,” Davies said. “If that gentleman hadn’t found her when he did, though, there’s no doubt she would have suffocated. It is heartbreaking to think how much she was suffering and how terrified she must have been.”

The cat’s owner had reported her missing in Dawson Creek at about 8:30 p.m. Monday. Rosie got her identifying tattoo and microchip from the SPCA’s low-cost spay/ neuter program.

“We are seeking any information about why Rosie was taken to Pouce Coupe and how she ended up in this life-threatening situation. It is clear from the way she was tied up and buried that this was a cruel and deliberate act of animal cruelty.”

Anyone with information is asked to please call the BC SPCA’s toll-free animal cruelty hotline at 1-855-622-7722.
