Independent Stewart wins backing of labour council in mayoral race
Kennedy Stewart has won the support of the Vancouver and District Labour Council in the election for mayor of Vancouver.
Stewart, who is stepping down as federal NDP MP for Burnaby South to run, received the endorsement during the labour council’s regular meeting on Tuesday.
The councils, which represents 50,000 workers who live in Vancouver from over 100 affiliated unions, also endorsed 10 candidates for city council, nine for Vancouver school board and seven for park board.
Nine Vision Vancouver candidates received endorsements, along with seven from the Greens, and five each from COPE and OneCity.
Stewart is the only independent candidate to receive the council’s support.
The council has been working behind the scenes to broker a deal among “progressive parties and groups,” including, among other things, an agreement on how many candidates each party runs for council, park board, and school board, to prevent vote-splitting on the left.
“This decision is the culmination of months of dialogue with parties, candidates, and our affiliates as well as the democratic debate and vote of our delegates,” said council president Stephen von Sychowski.
The VDLC also threw support behind three North Vancouver city candidates with endorsements of mayoral hopeful Linda Buchanan and council candidates Angela Girard and Mack McCorkindale, all independents.
B.C. municipal elections will be held Oct. 20.
