TRUNK SHOW CELEBRATES CROSS-COUNTRY FASHION

Canada’s top talents get together to showcase their brand designs

- ALEESHA HARRIS

Discovering new and unique Canadian designers is easier than ever these days thanks to social media.

But that doesn’t mean the sartorial discovery process is altogether, well, seamless.

The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards and the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver are looking to smooth things out a bit with a new trunk show, open to the public, featuring five cross-Canada design talents, including Christine, House of Nonie, Victoria Hayes, Di Carlo and UNTTLD.

We caught up with Hayes in advance of the Vancouver event in order to learn more about her brand, her style and what’s new:

Q When and why did you first want to become a designer?

A I’ve wanted to be a fashion designer since I was a child, but I did not actively pursue a career in this field until after studying pre-med and realizing I definitely did not want to practice medicine. I wanted to be in the “quality-of-life business” not the “life-and-death” business. Fashion, as a form of self-expression and non-verbal communication, has always been a huge interest of mine.

I am very lucky to be able to parlay this interest into a design career.

Q How would you describe your design esthetic?

A Bold, unapologetic, feminine, strong and colourful.

Q Who is your target customer? A We aim to make clothes that can be seen from a mile away, so I think of my customer as anyone who is interested in this concept and views clothing as a form of entertainment and self-expression. Our fabrication choices and garments are very strong, and designed with the intention of allowing the wearer to radiate confidence. See and be seen.

Fashion is part of the fun stuff in life. I want people of all ages, sizes and genders who relate to this concept to enjoy our clothing and accessories.

Q What’s new for the latest season?

A We’re working with new inspirations and trying to develop some new silhouettes and updates to our novelty suiting. My favourite thing to design is suits.

Q What can we expect at the trunk show?

A We’re showcasing our FW18 collection, Girls on Film, based on Stranger Things and the 1980s in Vancouver, and a selection of our FW18 garments will be available for purchase.

Q And where else can people check out your designs?

A Online at victoriahayesnyc.com and on our Instagram account victoria hayes collection.

Q What’s next?

A We are hard at work on our upcoming fall/winter 2019 collection due in the new year.
