Research goes into furniture, accessories for fussy felines

- Melissa Hank

What if your cat wasn’t snubbing you — it was just snubbing your decor?

Cat furniture and accessories brand Tuft + Paw is offering modern, minimalist accoutrements that are stylish and functional for your fluffy friend.

Items such as scratching posts, climbing structures and cat beds are available in a neutral colour palette with pale wood elements.

Plus, the litter boxes can come disguised as footstools and sets of drawers.

Prices reflect the luxury vibe, ranging from around $100 to around $949 (all figures in U.S. dollars). Smaller accessories include 100 per cent organic felted wool balls ($19), feeding stations ($69), carriers ($119 to $499) and collars ($49).

Tuft + Paw’s design team gave some insight into its creative process.

“Usually when you’re designing a product you start by asking potential users about their problems. Cat furniture presents a unique challenge because we can’t actually ask cats what they want, what makes them happy or the issues they have with current products.

“The way we solve this is by starting from the ground up and researching basic questions like what makes cats happy? Why do cats scratch?” they said.

“And finally, the most important step is to test our assumptions by creating product prototypes and carefully observing cats using the product before moving forward with production.”
