Flavoured spirits aren’t the only way to add spice to cocktails. Here are three other methods.

1 Bitters.

Aromatic and other bitters contain herbs and spices that add flavour and complexity to cocktails.

2 Syrups.

Instead of plain simple syrup, make a spiced one by simmering equal amounts of sugar and water with cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, whole cloves and/or fresh ginger root. Let the spices steep while the syrup cools, then strain them out.

3 Garnish.

Grate fresh nutmeg over a drink, pop a cinnamon stick in it or serve it with skewered pieces of candied ginger.
