Rookies will make goalies sweat

- Ken Warren

THE BIG MATCHUP

Elias Pettersson vs. Colin White

With 19 goals and 39 points, Elias Pettersson is the runaway leader in Calder Trophy discussions. Barring a major injury or extended slump, the honour is his to lose. Pettersson also has five power-play goals.

If not for him, though, Colin White would be at the top of the list. Like Pettersson, White has five power-play goals and is proving that he can thrive either as a winger or a centre.

FIVE KEYS TO THE GAME

1 Ending the third-period collapses

The Senators gave up five third-period goals on Monday in their 6-3 loss to Columbus and have been outscored 56-41 in the third period this season. The Canucks aren’t much better. They have been outscored 53-42 in the third period. Don’t leave the game early.

2 Losing focus with the losses

Frustration was the order of the day for the Senators after dropping their fourth straight game to Columbus. The aim is to somehow stress the small details while not looking at the big picture. Easier said than done.

3 Injection of youth

With Pettersson and Brock Boeser in the lineup, the Canucks’ future at forward looks bright. On the Senators’ side, Colin White and Brady Tkachuk also promise big things down the road.

4 Accepting what is given

The Canucks are almost as porous defensively as the Senators ( Vancouver has allowed 133 goals against, compared with Ottawa’s league-leading 159 goals against), meaning there will be opportunities to score. Patience is a priority.

5 Shutting the door

The Canucks are coming into Canadian Tire Centre on the heels of being shut out 4-0 by the Devils in New Jersey. The longer the shutout string goes, the more players will grow frustrated at not finding the net.
