THE FAIRMONT COPLEY PLAZA, BOSTON

- Larry Melnyk

Boston’s seven-story historical landmark ticks almost all the boxes with its old world charm and classical beauty without pretence.

The large rooms are updated, but retain original character and opulence. Attention to detail is in evidence everywhere. Look no further than the entry hallways; ornate decor and murals create a European classical art gallery feel.

Friendly doormen, staff and two Labrador retrievers “Carly and Gracie” welcome guests. The main entrance looks out at the iconic Boston Public Library and the square where the Boston Marathon finishes.

Royalty, celebrities and U.S. presidents including Kennedy have stayed at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel since 1912.

The hotel is steeped in history. Writers like Robert Parker set chapters in fiction occurring at CP. The Freedom Trail is a short stroll away as is the Boston. The famous “Cheers” bar where “everyone knows your name” is nearby.

The Boston metro subway trains literally at your doorstep will rapidly whisk you away to a Red Sox game at Fenway or to Harvard Square where you can soak up cerebral energy. Foodies can go to the North end in search of Italian culinary treasures like cannoli.

The “Grand Dame of Boston” has it all except for a swimming pool and tennis courts!
