Patch of indoor grass gives dogs a whiff of the litter-box lifestyle

- MELISSA HANK

When nature calls your pup in subzero temperatures, you can’t really blame the poor thing for refusing to answer. But now the company DoggieLawn has a solution that will let your dog do his business indoors instead of out.

For a monthly fee, the company will send you tiny plots of real grass meant to keep doggie doo-doo off your carpets and hardwood floors. It’s essentially a litter box for dogs.

“Finally, a subscription service for busy dog owners who want nothing but the best for their pet,” the website reads.

“For one low price, your dog gets a never-ending supply of fresh dog potty grass and you get the satisfaction of knowing your dog can ‘go’ when they want — day or night, rain or shine.”

Unlike similar products using artificial grass, which dogs may balk at because of their unnatural smell, DoggieLawn is made with hydroponically grown grass that can move outside to a porch or balcony in warm weather.

It also has an edge over plastic pee pads, which aren’t eco-friendly and need to be changed more often.

The patches of grass come in four sizes: standard (60 by 40 cm) for dogs under 15 pounds; medium (60 by 50 cm) for dogs between 10 and 30 pounds; large (60 by 60 cm) for dogs between 20 and 50 pounds; and extra large (60 by 120 cm) for dogs over 40 pounds or for homes with multiple dogs.

Prices range from US$26 to $34 per month. The service isn’t currently available in Canada, but with our frigid winters it can only be a matter of time until DoggieLawn — or a reasonable facsimile — breaks into the market.
