Industry event honours outstanding achievement in Metro Vancouver residential construction, renovation and design

While Metro Vancouver’s residential construction industry has seen significant changes over the last 10 years — from rising land costs to complex technical advancements — one constant has been the Ovation Awards, Homebuilders Association Vancouver’s (HAVAN) annual recognition of the sector’s outstanding achievements by its members.

As 30 member organizations were presented with 49 Ovation Awards at a recent gala at the JW Marriott Parq hotel in Vancouver, the prestigious Grand Ovation Awards went to Adera Development Corporation (Multi-Family Home Builder of the Year), Miracon Developments Inc. (Single-Family Home Builder of the Year), Tavan Developments Ltd. (Custom Home Builder of the Year) and Rodrozen Designs Inc. (Residential Renovator of the Year).

“Land and material costs have increased significantly, development and building permits continue to challenge the system, as do labour shortages, plus building science and the introduction of the B.C. Energy Step Code in 2017 to achieve energy efficiency in homes are just a few complex technical advancements (in the industry) that come to mind,” says HAVAN’s CEO Ron Rapp.

Adera was the big winner when the awards were announced at the gala attended by 450 industry representatives and guests. In addition to the Grand Ovation Multi-Family Home Builder of the Year award, Adera’s Grandview development took top honours in: Best Townhouse/Rowhome Development: Less than 1,500 square feet; Best Residential Community: Multi-Family; and Best Outdoor Living Space: Single-Family Production or Multi-Family.

The company also won Best Multi-Family Low-Rise Development (with Area3 Design Studio Inc.) for its Virtuoso project, taking Adera’s tally to five awards.

The Virtuoso development is notable for the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) as a substitute for slabs of concrete on each of the building ’s six floors.

Eric Andreasen, Adera’s vice-president of marketing and sales, believes the award for Virtuoso recognizes Adera’s focus on innovation and the use of materials like CLT.

“We’re humbly touched and very proud to win these Ovation awards,” says Andreasen, who adds that winning the awards as part of the program’s 10th anniversary — and as Adera celebrates its own 50th anniversary — is particularly meaningful.

While the awards support the company’s brand, they also build consumer trust, he says.

“The company and the awards it has won give people confidence. We have built through the good times and the bad times and we continue to make things work and give customers value.”

Miracon had special reason to celebrate its Grand Ovation award as Single-Family Home Builder of the Year.

“This is the third consecutive year we have won the award,” says Miracon vice-president of marketing and sales Ryan O’Shea.
