The Canadian men’s national soccer team ended a 34-year winless drought against the United States with a 2-0 victory at BMO Field in Toronto on Tuesday.

Alphonso Davies and Lucas Cavallini scored to give Canada its first win against the United States since April 2, 1985. Canada has 13 players on its current roster who had yet to be born.

“Right now, I have a million emotions running through me,” Davies said. “I’m happy to be able to score the goal to help my team get the win. I’m happy we got the win tonight and to score the goal is outstanding.”

The game was the first of two between the sides in CONCACAF Nations League Group A play. They will meet again on Nov. 15 in Orlando, Fla., for the opportunity to play in the Nations League semifinal.

Along with ending the drought of 17 games without a win against the U.S., Canada picked up a vital 18 points in the FIFA World Rankings, which are being used to determine the six teams in the region who will contend for three and-a-half spots for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Davies, 18, scored in the 63rd minute. The Edmonton product, who plays in Germany for Bayern Munich, had an easy tap-in after captain Scott Arfield was able to send in a low cross following a poor clearing from the U.S. defence.

Cavallini added a second in the 91st minute when he hammered a shot past goalkeeper Zack Steffen on a ball played over the top by Jonathan Osorio.

Canada was the better team in the contest and came close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute when Jonathan David was gifted a ball from U.S. midfielder Cristian Roldan at the top of the area.
