John Murdo Macdonald passed away on February 5th, 2020 - eight days after the passing of his dear wife, Joan. John was born in Trail, BC on December 30th, 1929 to Jessie and John Macdonald. John was magnetic. The world gravitated toward him and he flourished under the spotlight. John was a star football player in Trail and went on to spend most of his time at UBC on the football field; he played defensive guard for the team and provided a metronomic heartbeat on and off the pitch. He graduated with a double major in Physical Education and Zoology and later went on to receive his iron ring when he crossed the stage as a keen, young engineer in 1959. He rose to become the VP of Dillingham and travelled near and far throughout his successful career. John was an entertainer, a competitor, and a steadfast pillar to all who knew him - always at the centre of the crowd telling a humorous story with a beaming smile and a booming laugh.
John spent many days at Capilano Golf Club, playing rounds and rounds of golf and challenging the card sharks at the rap rummy table. Aside from 'The Club', he loved spending time on the ocean and was rarely seen without a smile when he had his fishing rod in hand. John was a captivating storyteller, a quick-witted charmer, and a lovable man with a great big heart. Even during his final days with Joan, his heart overflowed with adoration and respect for the woman who he had fallen in love with so many years before. After 66 years together, it seems that he just couldn't bare to live without her by his side.
Joan and John, you've left deep footprints on the hearts of your loved ones; you will be remembered fondly and missed immensely.
John and Joan are survived by their two children, Susan and Jay (Mary), and 7 grandchildren, Nick, Bria, Eric, Becca, Josh, Sarah, and Chris, whom they loved dearly. Their family would like to extend a special thank you to their caregivers, Ewa and Marie, as well as all the caregivers at Sunrise Senior Living. Celebration of Life to be held on March 14th at 2pm at Capilano Golf Club.
