WOMAN, 101, CAUGHT FLEEING HOME BY FIRE EXIT
A 101-year-old woman escaped from lockdown in a nursing home in Germany to visit her daughter. In a real-life echo of the quirky bestselling novel The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, the woman broke out of a nursing home in Braunschweig on Monday to be with her daughter on her 72nd birthday. Named only as Ursula K. under privacy laws, she escaped through the fire exit but was picked up by police — who drove her to her daughter to let her wish her a happy birthday, but only from the window of the car. Germany has 106,347 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,024 deaths, according to a Reuters tally.
