Anupaya celebrates ‘our shared wild spaces’

- ALEESHA HARRIS Aharris@postmedia.com

If there’s one thing the team behind the Ontario-based brand Anupaya hopes people remember about the brand, it’s that the people behind it “give a damn.”

Offering a curated selection of “outdoor inspired goods” such as candles, blankets, hats and more, the B Corp-certified company aims to offer environmentally conscious pieces that people can feel good about sporting.

We caught up with Shannon Maclaggan, a founder and creative director of the brand, to learn more.

Q What is Anupaya?

A Anupaya is a social enterprise committed to helping folks strengthen their gratitude and appreciation for our shared wild spaces. We sell ethically sourced and responsibly made outdoor-inspired quality goods. And, through our One Pound Promise, we clean up a pound of waste for every product sold.

Q Is there a story behind the name?

A Anupaya is actually a Sanskrit term that means “the pathless path.” This notion that we are all just figuring it out and yet somehow, mysteriously, life is already perfect just the way it is.

Q Who is the target customer?

A Mostly just folks who love the outdoors and want to do their part to help protect our shared wild spaces. People who care about the planet, who appreciate ethical fashion and choose to invest in companies that give a damn.

Q What makes it unique from other brands?

A We founded Anupaya as a way to use business as a force for good. Our mission and our corporate ethos is to leave the world and the places we visit in better shape then we found them.

Q What can you share about the sustainable angle of the brand?

A From concept to production, we strive to make ethical and environmentally sustainable choices. We’re committed to asking the tough questions and making the best decisions we can in support of the greater good, ones that aren’t only about increasing the bottom line, but also about caring for our planet and our communities, too.

Q Is there a popular piece in the collection?

A Our blankets and hats are our heavy hitters, for sure. Folks just love them. For cool fedoras, it’s really difficult to find ones that are ethically made right here at home. And our blankets are just the bees knees. Again, ethically sourced with eco-friendly and recycled fabric we import ourselves from Tuscany. So soft and gorgeous and durable, and just perfect for all the couch snuggling and outdoor adventuring you need in your life. With proper care — they’re machine washable — these babies will last you a lifetime.

Q Where can people check them out?

A Go to the website at anupaya. ca for all our products and One Pound Promise details. We also have some truly incredible bricks-and-mortar shops across Canada that carry our products, so check them out.
