Big, vibrant mural stretches across Burnaby development
A massive 4,000-square-foot mural will be unveiled in Burnaby this weekend at Brentwood Community Days.
The mural, by Vancouver artist Drew Young, was commissioned by Grosvenor Americas to create one of Metro Vancouver’s largest murals. Located on part of the Grosvenor Brentwood development site in Burnaby, the mural, entitled Pursuit of Chance, stretches about 49 metres in length and stands about six metres tall.
It took Young three weeks to paint the brightly coloured mural.
“The mural has a unique esthetic, striking a balance between photorealism and digital abstraction on a huge scale. It’s got one foot in the past and one in the future,” said Young, in a statement released Friday by Grosvenor.
Young also acts as curator and artistic director for the Vancouver
Mural Festival and visual arts director for the Skookum Festival.
“I’m looking at the mural’s vibrancy as a forecast for the neighbourhood, a soon-to-be vibrant space,” he said.
Young said the Brentwood mural was a chance for him to create unhindered, adding that Grosvenor gave him carte blanche to paint.
“It’s everything I’ve learned from practising public art, acting as a representation of the 10-plus years of skills I’ve developed as a muralist and fine artist,” he said.
The mural is at the same site as the Brentwood Great Takeout Food Truck Festival and Brentwood Artisan Farmers Market held each weekend through September and October.
Grosvenor has commissioned several high-profile public art pieces, including some from wellknown Vancouver author and artist Douglas Coupland.
