Hyundai unveils new trim package

- ALEX REID

Hyundai has taken the covers off its latest N-Line passenger car, showing off the performance trim as applied to the Hyundai Elantra.

The new trim replaces the old “Sport” trim, and this one pulls off the Sport angle much more convincingly.

The looks have changed to reflect the Elantra N-Line’s new personality: a more aggressive grille sits front and centre, while arrow-shaped air curtains flank the sides.

Side skirts accentuate the low and wide looks, while the rear now sports an integrated spoiler and twin chrome exhaust tips, plus an N-Line rear diffuser.

The interior also got some more driver-oriented features, such as paddle shifters, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, N sport seats, alloy pedals and a gear stick with leather inserts and metal accents. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine that produces 201 horsepower and 195.2 pound-feet torque (yes, Hyundai really included those 0.2 lb-ft) which are all sent through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed double-clutch transmission with selectable drive modes.

A multi-link rear suspension replaces the old torsion-beam type, while 18-inch wheels and larger front brake rotors make the sedan a much more capable performance driver. N-Line aside, Hyundai also promises there will be a Hybrid Elantra, featuring a 1.6-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder coupled with a 32-kW electric motor.
