Jumpsuit for joy

-

If we could only wear one thing for the rest of our lives, a jumpsuit would be pretty high on the list. They’re versatile — day to night, weekday to weekend, you get the gist — they’re flattering on all body types, and they’re just so easy. So easy, in fact, that we also think you can’t own too many. Rebecca Tay showcases five of the best jumpsuits out there right now.

FIELD WORK

Toronto-based label Horses Atelier is one of our favourites for cool blouses, dresses and jumpsuits, so much so that we often find ourselves buying the same item in a couple of different colours. Our latest obsession: this Belted Field Suit, which is both simple yet special. Made from hand-dyed Italian cotton linen canvas, the belted waist and slightly tapered leg prevent it from looking shapeless, while the diagonal patch pockets add that utilitarian feel we love so much in a jumpsuit. It also comes in five colours. Plus, a portion of every online sale goes to Clean Clothes, an organization that helps improve conditions and support workers in the global garment industry.

UTILITY ROOM

Jumpsuits and boilersuits are definitely the former sartorial territory of engineers, so it’s only fitting to nod to the origins of this wardrobe wonder. Enter this ‘Camille’ jumpsuit by denim brand Citizens of Humanity. Oversized and made from lightweight cotton linen, we especially love it worn cuffed with flat sandals or white sneakers.

BLUE SKIES AHEAD

This season, Belgian designer Stephan Schneider was inspired by trips to Home Depot in Arizona — and you can see how that translates into these coveralls. Cut from a lightweight, bright blue wool that hangs beautifully on the body, they look casual and cool when worn loose, or you can cinch the internal waistline drawstring for a more traditionally feminine look.

RED HOT

Not one for wallflowers, this poppy red jumpsuit by Vetra Coverall is made in France based on a vintage pattern. A streamlined silhouette — long sleeves, wide, straight legs, and five pockets — means you can keep things simple or accessorize to your heart’s desire (we love the idea of adding big, sparkly earrings and a jazzy, ’90s-inspired belt).

BLACK MAGIC

We’ve long been fans of Smash + Tess, the Canadian brand known for its easy, wear-everywhere stretch jersey and Tencel jumpsuits, and we’re into this latest release, the Jane romper. The wide, cropped leg, cinched waist, tortoiseshell buttons and flowy sleeves lend a slightly dressier feel — an ankle boot or heeled sandal is no problem with this style — while the pockets and material keep it practical if the only thing on your agenda is lounging.
