That '70s look is back in style again

-

There's no doubt the 1970s was one of the most stylish decades in history, and no doubt, either, that fashion continues to be inspired by its style icons — people like Twiggy, Farrah Fawcett, and Jean Shrimpton. Whether it's A-line skirts, knee-high boots, a retro colour palette of burnt orange, mustard and teal, or anything suede, denim or corduroy, Rebecca Tay showcases five pieces that will have you channelling the '70s right now.

DRESS CODE

Anything paisley or scarf-print is instantaneously 1970s, especially if it's also got a drapey sleeve, tiered silhouette and pumpkin hue. This Michael Kors georgette dress, with its smocked bodice and floaty shape, is easy to imagine on Jane Birkin, and yet it also feels so now. Finish with a modern bag to prevent the look from getting costume-y.

PERFECT PARTNERSHIP

If you haven't heard of FARM Rio, get to know it, stat: the Brazilian fashion brand was founded as a market booth in Rio de Janeiro in 1997 and its playful prints and vibrant colours are now stocked in more than 75 stores in its home country, as well as on sites such as Shopbop.com. Now it has created a collection with Levi's, decorating the denim giant's dresses, tees, and jeans (including this High Loose style) with Brazilian icons such as toucans, tree frogs, parrots and more. Together they're also planting 14,000 trees to help preserve and restore two Brazilian forests.

BUDGET BUY

Boots are definitely a key feature when it comes to '70s fashion, but for something a bit different — or if the weather holds out and you'd rather save the heavy layers for later on in the season — consider these vegan leather slingbacks. From their mustard shade to their square toe and crocodile print, they're a great shoe to wear with cropped pants, denim and more.

DENIM D AY S

A denim skirt is an year-round staple, but we especially love them in the fall when you can wear them with boots or sneakers, a T-shirt or a sweater, and even layer on tights if it's a particularly cold day. This A-line version is perfect for all of the above and we love its oversized patch pockets as well.
