Just what the doctor ordered
Television's Mcdreamy lives in a Mcdandy house. Patrick Dempsey, who starred as Derek Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy from 2005 to 2015, recently let fans peek inside his Frank Gehry home in Malibu, Calif., where he and his family have lived for five years.
“We were looking for a little land and space, and a house with some architectural significance,” Dempsey told Architectural Digest. “The exterior's simplicity appealed to me, and the inside felt very expansive and calming. Everywhere you looked there was something visually pleasing.”
Gehry started working on the place, a roughly 5,000-square-foot combined studio and residence, for artist Ron Davis in 1968. The Toronto-born architect had established his own firm just six years earlier.
When Dempsey, his wife Jillian and three children found the house, owners Sue and Alex Glasscock had kept the original facade and footprint but transformed the interiors and grounds with decorator Michael Lee and landscape designer Scott Shrader. The Dempseys collaborated with Shrader to customize the property.
“When Patrick and Jillian moved in with the children, it changed the dynamic of the property,” Shrader told Architectural Digest. The outdoors became a space for family fun, with a soccer lawn, kitchen with a pizza oven, dining area and enclosures for the Dempseys' dogs, chickens, miniature donkeys, rabbits, goats, pigs and African tortoise.
“We converted the Glasscocks' riding arena into an extensive tract of planting beds for an array of vegetables and flowers,” Schrader said, in keeping with Jillian's passion for organic gardening.
