Founder of organic brand aims to simplify skin care

- ALEESHA HARRIS aharris@postmedia.com

Paring down the number of products in a skin care routine may seem like a counterproductive approach for a company that sells skin care products.

But that's exactly what the founder of the Canadian brand Helena Lane Organic Skincare is aiming for. With the hopes of simplifying peoples' skin care routines, the founder of the brand, Helena Lane, offers organic product options, including facial cleansers, mists and more, that are straightforward in their ingredients — and approach.

Q For those who aren't familiar, what is Helena Lane Organic Skincare?

A Helena Lane Organic Skincare is a healthier way of looking after your skin. Our skin and its health is a part of both body and mind health. It's a showcase for what is happening internally, yet we are bombarded — externally — with airbrushed images of what skin care companies want us to strive for. If we are not careful, we'll only look in the mirror and see not good enough. At Helena Lane Organic Skincare, we want you to look in the mirror, see the radiance coming from your real skin, and think I am enough.

Q What makes it unique from other natural skin care lines?

A We make skin care products by hand with minimal ingredients that are certified organic, that are clean, effective and offered at an affordable price.

Q Who is the target customer?

A Can I say everyone? We are loved by teens to the elderly, organic fanatics to beauty product junkies. My biggest market, however, is women in their 30s to 60s.

Q Where are the products made?

A We hand-make all the products in our studio in Squamish.

Q Is there a `hero' product in the lineup? If so, which one and what makes it so popular?

A I believe cleansing is the most important part of looking after your skin. Cleansers, of all products, have the potential to damage your skin the most. Get it wrong, and you will be repairing the damage. Get it right, and everything else falls into place.

Q What is the price range for the products?

A Pricing ranges from $26 to $46 for individual face care products.

Q Lastly, where can people check them out?

A We're available at select independent retailers and spas, as well as a few Whole Foods Markets in Canada, and Helenalane.com.
