The Weeknd had a great Tuesday morning as the Scarborough, Ont.born musician led the field of 2021 Juno nominees with six nods in major categories.
This year's Super Bowl halftime show performer is up for Juno fan choice, best single for Blinding Lights, best album and contemporary R&B recording for After Hours, best artist and best songwriter, shared with Belly (Ahmad Balshe) and Jason (DaHeala) Quenneville.
Among those just behind The Weeknd's tally with five nominations is Stratford, Ont.'s Justin Bieber, for Juno fan choice, best single for Intentions featuring Quavo, best album and pop album for Changes and best artist.
Also up for five awards is Jessie Reyez, a Torontonian born to Columbian parents, who will compete for best artist, best songwriter, best contemporary R&B recording for Before Love Came To Kill Us and two best music video mentions for No One's In The Room and Intruders; and Toronto's JP Saxe, nominated for Juno fan choice, best single for If The World Was Ending (feat. his real-life girlfriend, Julia Michaels), best breakthrough artist, best songwriter and best pop album for Hold It Together.
There was much hope for holding the 50th edition of Canada's music awards in Toronto after the 2020 Saskatoon ceremony was cancelled at the last minute due to COVID-19. The broadcast was originally going to be held at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena on March 28, but was later moved to May 16, although continuing pandemic restrictions mean it can't be held in a packed indoor arena.
Instead, CARAS-Junos president-CEO Allan Reid says Toronto's outdoor Budweiser Stage will be among the venues featured across the country, but stopped short of calling it the host venue.
He also said he didn't think tickets would be sold to the public for the Junos broadcast, as has been the case in previous years.
One other confirmed venue is Calgary's Studio Bell, the National Music Centre, where Jann Arden will be formally inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame after that honour failed to happen in 2020.
Pegi Cecconi is getting the Walt Grealis special achievement award. That trophy and 37 other Junos will be handed out at the pre-telecast awards on May 14, Reid said.
The Tragically Hip members will get the humanitarian award during the Junos broadcast on May 16.
Reid said he hopes “to have the majority of the show live.”
