Unbeaten Gonzaga roars into Elite Eight

Drew Timme scored a game-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting as top overall seed Gonzaga cruised into the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight, dominating fifth-seeded Creighton 83-65 Sunday in a West Region game in Indianapol­is.

The Bulldogs (29-0), who have won their past 26 games by double-digit margins, face the winner of Sunday's late game between Pacific-12 Conference rivals USC and Oregon for the regional title Tuesday and a berth in the Final Four.

Andrew Nembhard of Aurora, Ont., scored 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting with eight assists and Joel Ayayi added 13 points and eight rebounds for Gonzaga, which is seeking to become the first team to cap an undefeated season with a national title since Indiana in 1975-76.

Corey Kispert and Jalen Suggs, who along with Timme were named to the 10-man Wooden All-American team, scored 12 and nine points, respective­ly. Suggs added six assists and five rebounds and Kispert grabbed seven rebounds. Timme had six rebounds and four assists.

Marcus Zegarowski led Creighton (22-9) with 19 points.

Denzel Mahoney added 13 points and Christian Bishop scored 12 with five rebounds and three assists.

MICHIGAN ROLLS PAST FLORIDA STATE

Top-seeded Michigan used stout first-half defence and efficient second-half offence Sunday to rout fourth-seeded Florida State 76-58 in the East Region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in Indianapol­is.

Hunter Dickinson and Brandon Johns Jr. each scored a game-high 14 points for the Wolverines (234), which will play UCLA on Tuesday for the regional crown and a berth in the Final Four.

Franz Wagner added 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and Chaundee Brown chipped in 12 for Michigan, which converted 18 of 26 field-goal attempts in the second half. The Wolverines drew assists off all but three of those buckets and also enjoyed a 24-6 advantage in points off turnovers for the game.

Malik Osborne scored 12 points for the Seminoles (18-7), hitting 4 of 7 from three-point range. M.J. Walker added 10 points, but he made only 5 of 14 field-goal attempts.

UCLA STUNS TIDE IN OT

David Singleton scored seven of his 15 points in overtime and 11th-seeded UCLA booked a spot in the Elite Eight with a stunning 88-78 overtime victory over second-seeded Alabama on Sunday in the East Region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament at famed Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapol­is.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. contribute­d 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals as the Bruins (21-9) won their fourth straight game in the tourney to advance this deep for the first time since 2008. UCLA joins Virginia Commonweal­th (2011) as the only schools to play in the First Four and reach the Elite Eight. UCLA will face top-seeded Michigan (23-4) in Tuesday's regional final.

The Crimson Tide forced overtime when Alex Reese knocked down a long three-pointer for his first points of the game to tie it at 65-65 with 0.4 seconds left.

ANDREESCU ADVANCES

Canadian Bianca Andreescu advanced to the round of 16 at the Miami Open tennis tournament by grinding out a win over Amanda Anisimova of the United States on Sunday night.

The eighth-seeded Andreescu was forced to the limit by her American foe before prevailing 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 6-4. She will next face Garbine Muguruza of Spain, who ousted Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. They're slated to square off Monday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

On the men's side, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada was ousted in the round of 32 by American John Isner, falling in straight sets 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).

LAKERS LAND DRUMMOND

Free agent centre Andre Drummond says he is joining the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, having cleared waivers Sunday evening.

The two-time all-star and fourtime NBA rebounding leader agreed to a buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday.

Drummond, using an image of himself in a Lakers uniform and cradling a basketball, posted the photo on Instagram on Sunday evening and wrote: “Back to work.”.

NFL SET TO APPROVE 17-GAME SEASON

NFL owners will approve the expansion of the regular season to 17 games this week, ESPN reported Sunday.

It would be the first expansion of the schedule since moving from 14 games to 16 in 1978.

The change has been expected since the NFL and the National Football League Players Associatio­n approved the latest collective bargaining agreement in March 2020.

Owners of the 32 NFL teams are scheduled to hold meetings remotely on Tuesday and Wednesday.
