5 benefits of using rubber paving

- GERALD VANDER PYL

Has your aging concrete driveway, sidewalk or patio seen better days?

Urban Rubber Paving in Vancouver has a solution that is quick, simple and stands up to the elements and the test of time.

The company recovers concrete, wood or other surfaces with a layer of rubber paving made of a mixture of urethane and rubber crumb from recycled tires.

Here are five benefits of using rubber paving:

1. It's more affordable than replacing concrete

Removing a concrete driveway and pouring a new one can cost $16 to $18 a square foot, while rubber paving costs about $9 to $10 a square foot, says Mitchell Garvie, owner of Urban Rubber Paving in Vancouver.

Smaller concrete surfaces such as a patio are more labour intensive and can be even more expensive to replace, adds Garvie.

Rubber paving is placed on top of the existing surface, so there are no removal expenses.

In fact, the urethane in the rubber mixture bonds to the concrete, creating a strong, long-lasting surface, Garvie says.

2. It's lowmaintenance and long-lasting

Garvie points out that millions of dollars have been spent by tire manufacturers to make their products more durable, and that same long-lasting rubber is used by Urban Rubber Paving.

Rubber pavement is not affected by temperature, is impervious to salt and not damaged by heavy vehicles. It literally bounces back into shape after being driven or parked on.

It cleans up with a garden hose or pressure washer, and can be freshened with a new coating of urethane every five years or so if needed.

3. It's environmentally friendly

Because modern tire rubber lasts so long, it is hard to dispose of.

Rubber paving converts the rubber from used tires into a new useful product.

Garvie says an average driveway uses the rubber from about 100 recycled passenger tires that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

4. It's easy to install

Unlike pouring a new concrete driveway, sidewalk or patio, rubber paving doesn’t require the construction of forms. Since the old concrete doesn’t have to be removed, there is less damage to surrounding areas.

An installation typically takes just one day. Once completed, the new surface can be walked on after 24 hours or driven on after 72 hours. Urban Rubber Paving offers a customizable blend of coloured rubber crumb using patented technology to enhance the curb appeal of your home.

5. Rubber pavement is weather friendly

Rubber pavement has a textured surface that is slip-resistant. It is also slightly porous, which keeps water from pooling and helps prevent black ice from forming. Because snow doesn’t stick to the surface, it’s easier to shovel, too.
