FIRST GUILTY PLEA ENTERED IN CAPITOL RIOT CASE
The first person charged with taking part in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot pleaded guilty on Friday to two federal charges.
Jon Schaffer, a native of Indiana, entered a guilty plea to charges of obstructing the certification of the 2020 election and breaching a restricted building in Washington D.C. federal court.
Five people, including a Capitol Police officer, died in the violence.
In a court filing, prosecutors said Schaffer “was among the rioters who sprayed United States Capitol Police officers with bear spray.”
Prosecutors said Schaffer was “photographed and captured on surveillance video” carrying the spray and was filmed “engaging in verbal altercations with Capitol Police officers inside the Capitol Building.”
More than 400 people have been charged.
