Take a tour of Vancouver heritage homes from the comfort of your own house

- SHAWN CONNER

This year, those who look forward to the annual Heritage House Tour can sit back and not worry about parking in a “permit-parking-only” zone.

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation's Heritage House Tour 2021 Online showcases six local homes over two evening sessions. The sessions take place June 3 and 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and each features three abodes. A guide provides commentary in pre-recorded videos and, after the tour, answers questions.

Typically, the Heritage House Tour features about 10 homes in a one-day event. Although there are fewer locations this year, the switch to virtual has its advantages. Some of the selections may not have fit into the regular format.

“Two are part of a strata, and one is a rental apartment which would be challenging to do with lots of people,” said Vancouver Heritage Foundation executive director Judith Mosley. “There's definitely an opportunity to see inside spaces we normally wouldn't be able to get to.”

Located in five different neighbourhoods, the attractions include a 1958 mid-century modern home, an 1890s Strathcona home, a restored Shaughnessy estate home with modern retrofits, and a 1928 apartment.

“We like to present a variety,” Mosley said. “So we like to have different ages, different sizes, different styles, and different stories, as well as a selection of neighbourhoods.” The oldest home was built in 1892, the newest in 1958. “It gives us lots of scope to explore local history, people who have lived in the home, designed and built them, as well as how the homes have been maintained, restored and updated for modern living.”

She expects the 1912 Mission Revival-style home in Shaughnessy to appeal to tour regulars and heritage home connoisseurs. “But there's definitely something there for the mid-century modern-lovers and for those who appreciate more modest homes as well. They're not all big mansions by any means.”

Since the tour began in 2003, it has grown to attract over 1,000 visitors.

“It's built up over the years, and a lot of people really love coming out to enjoy the day and explore different houses. But with the virtual tour, there is that opportunity for people to join from elsewhere. You don't have to be in the city. And if we get good support we may look at how we incorporate the online component into the tour in the future.”

Once registered at vancouverheritagefoundation.org, participants will receive details on how to join each event. Registration is $40 ($30 for students with valid ID). Those unable to attend at the time can still register and access the recordings. Funds raised support the Heritage Foundation's educational programs and other projects.
