KILLAM, Becky Lynn
Apr 11, 1945 - Apr 7, 2022
Becky, aged almost 77, has died after living with ovarian cancer for more than 13 years. Tiny but mighty, Becky embraced treatments that were not the standard of care for her cancer and combined them with a successful determination to live life as fully as possible. This was facilitated by a determination to run, swim, or walk every day and to eat well. She also enjoyed/demanded a glass of wine every day. Becky, who was born in Brantford but raised in Orillia, was Queen of the Prom and Valedictorian at her high school. She obtained a BA at Queens and a Master of Social Work degree at UBC. For a number of years she worked at Sunnyside Children's Centre in Kingston, Ontario and with indigenous communities in B.C. She retired in 1982, large with first child after marrying her second and preferred husband James. She then devoted herself to her two sons, Riley and Lee, and her many relatives, some of whom, a few generations down, referred to her as Great Becky. Quick witted, intelligent, funny, and insightful, Becky was deeply curious about those she met, even briefly, and was able to form a special bond with them. She genuinely cared about others, including those who were charged with caring for her. Becky was rare and special. The family is thankful to the many people who contributed to Becky's treatments and care over the years, with special mention of those who took risks and the nurses who worked tirelessly, and with such empathy, to care for her. It was Becky's wish that there be no funeral. No flowers please.
