Shots fired at cops during 10-hour standoff: RCMP

Police were fired at from a home as officers were trying to negotiate with what they called a “distraught man” who was holed up in Chilliwack for hours on Monday.

Chilliwack RCMP were called about the man, who was reported to have access to several guns, in the 46000 block of Knight Road at about 2:15 p.m.

The regional emergency response team assisted Chilliwack Mounties during what was described as a “high-risk” situation. No officers were hit when the shots were fired at about 7:45 p.m., Chilliwack RCMP said.

But as a precaution, residents of 16 homes in the area of Knight Road near Queens and Melville streets and Downes Avenue were warned to stay indoors and keep away from exterior walls.

Negotiations continued through the night and, at some point, the home was badly damaged by fire. While that was going on, police asked the public to not post photos on social media that would show the movement of officers outside the house.

A 29-year-old man was taken into custody just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police thanked area residents for their co-operation and patience, and said victim services is available to anyone who feels they need it.

“This incident was a very dynamic, high-risk situation for all those involved,” said RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk.

“We will be working with residents in the area over the next few days to ensure that they are aware of the services available.”

Vrolyk said the 10-hour standoff was “a reminder of the dangers of police work” and credited teamwork, training and the expertise of the emergency response team for resolving it safely and without anyone being seriously hurt.
