Dabrowski, Routliffe advance in Dubai

The second-seeded team of Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand's Erin Routliffe advanced to the women's doubles quarterfin­als of the Dubai Tennis Championsh­ips with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 second-round win over China's Zhang Shuai and Kazakhstan's Anna Danilina on Wednesday.

Dabrowski and Routliffe will next face the sixth-seeded duo of Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. It's a rematch from this year's Australian Open semifinals, which Kichenok and Ostapenko won 7-5, 7-5.

Canada will be without Sydney

Collins at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup after the North Carolina Courage defender fractured her ankle in the Canadian camp.

There was no word on when the injury occurred.

The 10th-ranked Canadian women open play today against No. 104 El Salvador in Houston.

The Columbus Crew have signed

Canadian wingback Mohamed Farsi to a contract extension through the 2027 season with a club option for 2028.

The 24-year-old from Montreal, who started the Crew's MLS Cup final win over Los Angeles FC in December, is going into his third season with the MLS champions.

Farsi appeared in 31 regular-season games, including 23 starts, in 2023 in his first full season with the Crew's first team.

Farsi has two senior caps for Canada and was named Canada Soccer Futsal Player of the Year for 2020.

Canada is returning to the

world senior men's tackle football championsh­ip. The national team will compete in the 2025 Internatio­nal Federation of American Football event, the bulk of which will be held in Germany.

Canada last participat­ed in the event in 2011, downing Austria to earn a silver medal.

Washington Capitals centre Nic Dowd,

one of the top candidates to change places ahead of the NHL trade deadline, is day to day with an upper-body injury.

Coach Spencer Carbery said Wednesday that Dowd is not travelling on Washington's road trip with games at Tampa Bay and Florida.

A faceoff specialist and penalty killer signed through next season at $1.3 million, Dowd could fetch a high price from a contender before the March 8 trade deadline.

The 33-year-old has eight goals and 16 points this season.

Starting what could be his

final season with the New York Yankees, Gleyber Torres was clear about his intent.

“I don't want to leave,” the 27-year-old infielder said Wednesday.

“I want to be a Yankee for life.”

Torres hit .273 with 25 homers, 68 RBIs and 13 stolen bases last season. He will earn US$14.2 million this season before hitting free agency.
