Canada's Olin to compete in Olympic surfing

-

Sanoa Olin will represent Canada in surfing at the Paris Olympics this summer.

Olin, a native of Tofino who turned 19 today, was already provisionally qualified for the Olympics by virtue of her earning a silver medal at last year's Pan American Games in Chile. But she confirmed her place by finishing tied for 13th at the ISA World Surfing Games, the final Olympic qualifier that wrapped up Sunday in Puerto Rico.

The top eight women booked their ticket to Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, which will host the Olympic surfing event starting July 27. But Olin's 13th-place finish in Puerto Rico qualified her irrespective of her Pan Am Games performance given some of the women ahead of her were already headed to the Olympics.

The positive for Surf Canada is a Canadian will be in the Olympic field, which will raise the profile of the sport.

Austin Eckroat waited a long

time to become a winner on the PGA Tour. Another day didn't hurt.

Eckroat got the first victory of his tour career Monday, topping Erik van Rooyen and Min Woo Lee by three shots to win the weather-delayed Cognizant Classic at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Among his prizes: US$1.62 million — by far his biggest golf payday — along with tour status for two years and a trip to the Masters for the first time.

Eckroat shot a final round of 4-under 67, finishing at 17-under 267.

Caitlin Clark major U.S. college basketball scoring records in less than three weeks. Finally, the Iowa superstar can take a breath.

“I'm so focused on helping this team win and be so great, it's hard to wrap my head around everything going on,” she said. “I'm trying to soak in the moment.”

Clark's dizzying regular season ended Sunday with her passing Pete Maravich as the NCAA Division I overall scoring leader during the sixth-ranked Hawkeyes' 93-83 win over No. 2 Ohio State in Iowa City.

Four days earlier, she took down Lynette Woodard's major college women's scoring record, and two weeks before that she broke Kelsey Plum's Division I record.

Maravich's 54-year-old record was considered the holy grail, and many observers will want to put an asterisk on Clark's accomplishment because Maravich amassed his 3,667 points in 83 games over three seasons at LSU (1967-70) and without having a 3-point line or shot clock.

Clark, who scored 35 points against the Buckeyes, will go into the Big Ten Tournament with 3,685 in 130 games.

That she will go into her final games at Iowa atop the NCAA's all-time scoring chart is something she is yet to fully grasp.

“If you had told me that before my college career started, I would have laughed in your face and been like, `No, you're insane,'” she said.
