Work-life balance is important at Baker Tilly

The accounting firm prioritizes flexibility so its employees don’t need to choose between career and family

At Baker Tilly — one of Canada’s largest associations of Chartered Professional Accounting firms — the number of women in key leadership positions is growing. The firm is committed to supporting women across a variety of roles, ranging from partner to manager, human resource lead and more.

Inderpreet Mand, a partner with Baker Tilly WM LLP in Vancouver, says she has found the firm to be supportive of women in the accounting profession, which has enabled her to create a healthy work-life balance over the years.

“When I came back from my first maternity leave, I had the flexibility of coming back on a gradual return, so it wasn’t as overwhelming and there was time to settle back into my role,” she says.

That flexibility has helped Mand advance her career at Baker Tilly since joining the firm as a manager in October 2014. She was promoted to senior manager in October 2018 and became a partner in January of last year, specializing in entertainment and new media, audit and accounting.

The firm’s atmosphere supports open communication that allows women and all staff to advance their careers in a positive and meaningful way, she adds.

“We encourage growth and provide mentorship to our staff that helps align their goals and (the) firm’s goals.”

While accounting is often viewed as a maledominated profession, Baker Tilly has been leading the way in changing that perception over the years, something that Mand has experienced firsthand.

“The firm has evolved over the years,” she says. “There is more female and diverse leadership at the top, including females with young families.”

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is Inspire Inclusion, and Mand encourages young women thinking of a career path to consider accounting.

“It opens up a lot of doors for opportunities and provides flexibility.”

Baker Tilly celebrates all the women at the firm and wants to thank the partners for their contribution to the accounting industry: Aycha Aziz, Doris Cen, Janne Fossberg, An Lam, Louise Lee, Johanna Leh, Heather Loblaw, Inderpreet Mand, Anna Moreton, Jodi Rustad and Simi Sodhi.
