Canadians to face Mexico in friendly

-

Canada will face 15thranked Mexico in a men's soccer friendly in the September FIFA international window. The game is scheduled for Sept. 10 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

It's the second high-profile friendly announced recently. The 50th-ranked Canadians are set to face the sixth-ranked Netherlands in Rotterdam on June 6.

The matchups have been months in the making with teams looking for tune-ups ahead of Euro 2024, set to kick off June 14 in Germany, and Copa America, which starts June 20 across the U.S.

The September game marks the first meeting with Mexico since a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win by Canada in wintry conditions in Edmonton in November 2021.

Next up for Canada is a Copa America playoff against No. 96 Trinidad and Tobago on March 23 in Texas.

The 2023 Grey Cup provided economic gain for both the city of Hamilton and province of Ontario.

According to a study by Sport Tourism Canada, the game and 2023 Grey Cup festival generated a net economic impact of $41.9 million, including $35.4 million for Ontario and $29.2 million for Hamilton, which staged the game.

The study stated the game and festival generated more than $73.5 million in total national economic activity.

Some 223,216 people attended the six-day festival and championship game.

Forty-two per cent said they came to Hamilton from outside of Ontario.

Former Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns that's worth up to US$3.5 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team didn't announce the deal, which cannot become official until Wednesday, the start of the new league year.

Hines was released by the Bills earlier this month. The seventh-year pro missed all of last season after a boating accident in which he suffered a torn ACL when he was struck by a jet skier in North Carolina.

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens agreed to a two-year contract with free agent running back Derrick Henry on Tuesday, according to a source. The deal is worth up to $20 million and includes $9 million guaranteed.

Henry, 30, led the NFL in 2023 with 280 rushing attempts and ranked second to Christian McCaffrey with 1,167 yards rushing. His eight-year NFL career includes a 2020 season when he rushed for 2,027 yards.

The Nashville Predators will be without defenceman Dante Fabbro for two to three weeks because of an upper-body injury.

Fabbro was hurt Sunday in a 4-3 overtime loss at Minnesota.

The 25-year-old is having his best season, with 12 points in 53 games, and ranks third on the team with a plus-11 rating.
