PWHL suspends Toronto's Howard

-

The Professional Women's Hockey League handed Toronto forward Brittany Howard a one-game suspension Thursday for a cross-checking incident in Toronto's 3-0 win over Montreal last Friday.

The infraction occurred late in the second period when Howard struck Montreal defender Catherine Daoust in the back of the head during a scramble in front of the net. Daoust got up under her own power, but in obvious pain,

Howard was not penalized on the play, with Montreal head coach Kori Cheverie saying post-game the officials told her they didn't see the hit.

With the franchise coming off its best season in 32 years, the Detroit Lions have extended the contracts of coach Dan Campbell and GM Brad Holmes through the 2027 season.

Holmes joined the Lions prior to the start of the 2021 season and has been credited with rebuilding the Lions' roster through a vision for sustained success. He drafted lineman Penei Sewell (2021), receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (2021), defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson (2022), receiver Jameson Williams (2022), tight end Jack Campbell (2023) and safety Brian Branch (2023).

Campbell led the Lions to their first NFC North Division title in 2023 as well as their first NFL playoff victory in 32 years.

The NFL is reviewing whether the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles violated tampering policies during the legal tampering window, a league spokesman said Thursday.

The Falcons agreed to a contract with four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins shortly after teams were permitted to start negotiating with unrestricted free agents on Monday.

The Eagles struck a deal with two-time Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley soon after the negotiation period opened.

Penn State coach James Franklin told a reporter that Eagles GM Howie Roseman spoke to Barkley and pitched him on the connection between the Eagles and Nittany Lions fan bases.

Teams are permitted to talk directly with agents during the 52-hour negotiating window, but can't speak to the player unless he has no agent and represents himself.

The Eagles have denied the claims.

Toronto FC will be without goalkeeper Sean Johnson and fullback Richie Laryea for two to three more weeks due to hamstring strains.

Coach John Herdman says Laryea, who has missed the last two games, is expected to be out for three more weeks.

Johnson, who was injured on the eve of Saturday's home-opening 1-0 win over Charlotte FC, is expected to be sidelined for two more weeks.

Toronto plays at winless New York City FC on Saturday.
