Rangers' Jung out six weeks with broken right wrist

-

Texas third baseman Josh Jung was scheduled for surgery this week on his broken right wrist and will miss about six weeks, according to Rangers general manager Chris Young.

Jung was hurt when he was hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay reliever Phil Maton on a swinging strike Monday. Young said screws and a plate were to be used during the operation in Phoenix.

The 26-year-old Jung hit .266 with 23 home runs and a .781 on base plus slugging (OPS) last season, finishing fourth in American League rookie of the year voting. He batted .308 with an .867 OPS in the post-season for the World Series champions.

The Masters has 88 players in the field, with one spot available if the winner of the Valero Texas Open is not already eligible.

If it stays at 88 — a possibility considering the Texas Open field has 30 golfers already exempt — that would be the same number as 2023.

The concern was only 77 players were exempt at the end of last year. But the start of 2024 featured eight players earning spots by winning on the PGA Tour, three of them rookies.

Only five golfers earned Masters invitations by winning early in 2023.

Italian jockey Stefano Cherchi, who rode more than 100 winners in the United Kingdom, has died after being injured in a fall in Australia last month. He was 23.

Cherchi's mount Hasime fell, with two other riders escaping serious injury after being unseated in the incident.

He received medical treatment at the track before being transferred to the hospital and was found to have sustained a head injury and internal bleeding.
