More teams look to join women's pro soccer league
Three more clubs have submitted applications to Canada Soccer to join Project 8, the domestic women's pro soccer league currently under construction.
Project 8 did not identify the new clubs. Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto have already signed up.
The applications for professional club admission will be considered at Canada Soccer's annual general meeting in early May in Montreal.
Project 8 says league branding, player signings and ticket presales are slated to begin in the summer.
The plan is for an eightteam, two-conference league to start play in 2025. AFC Toronto City became the new league's third founding franchise in April 2023, joining the Vancouver Whitecaps and Calgary Foothills.
Canada's Brad Gushue
clinched a playoff spot with a 7-4 win over Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway at the world men's curling championship Thursday in Switzerland. Canada was set to face Sweden later in the day.
Round robin play continues through Friday night. The top six teams qualify for the playoffs. The medal games will be held Sunday.
Canada's Leylah Fernandez
was eliminated from the Charleston Open tennis tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to American Sloane Stephens Thursday. Fernandez struggled on serve, hitting into six double faults and facing nine break points, saving six.
Fernandez, whose singles record this season dropped to 7-8, has lost five of her last six matches.
Caitlin Clark is capping her
illustrious college career with another record-breaking season and another set of prestigious awards.
The star guard from Iowa was honoured Thursday as The Associated Press Player of the Year in women's basketball for the second consecutive year.
Clark received 35 votes from the 36-member national media panel that votes on the AP Top 25 each week. Cameron Brink of Stanford received the other vote. Voting was done before March Madness began.
The 22-year-old Clark is the sixth player to win the award more than once and fifth to do it in consecutive seasons.
The NCAA Division I career scoring leader set numerous records while helping Iowa reach the Final Four for a second consecutive season. A semifinal matchup with UConn awaits on tonight in Cleveland.
The Athletics will leave Oakland after this season and play temporarily at a minor league park near Sacramento until their planned stadium in Las Vegas is built.
The A's announced the decision to play at the home of the Sacramento River Cats from 2025-27 with an option for 2028 on Thursday after they were unable to reach an agreement to extend their lease in Oakland.
The A's declared their intention last April to move to Las Vegas.
