Snowfall provides final push for ski hills
Metro Vancouver ski hills got a dump of snow on Monday, a last-minute springtime boon for what has been a challenging, snow-scarce season.
With the countdown on for the last days of ski and snowboard season, here's what Vancouver's local ski areas — Seymour, Cypress and Grouse — have for their last hurrahs until closing day.
MOUNT SEYMOUR
Last day: April 14
Lift tickets: $39-89 adults, depending on time of day What's open: 32 out of 44 runs; two out of three chair lifts and the Goldie Magic Carpet in the learning area
Ski/snowboard hours: 1-9 p.m. weekdays including night skiing, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekends 48-hour snowfall as of Tuesday: 34 centimetres Accumulation: 327 cm at the summit, 140 cm at the base
Mount Seymour got about 25 cm of snow on Monday, the largest dump of snow from the recent storm.
It's not rare to get snow dumps in April and May, said resort spokesman Simon Whitehead, but the resort usually closes early April as demand typically drops off after spring break.
This year, the resort has extended the season by a week to give season pass holders extra value after a disappointing start to the season.
It is not offering spring deals, unlike past years, to let pass holders enjoy the mountain with no additional crowds.
Seymour opened in late January and had to close for a while in February due to the lack of snow. To make up for the shorter season, it offered pass holders a 30 per cent discount for next season's passes.
There's some good skiing and snowboarding in the next few days, said Whitehead.
“It'll be sunny, looks like it'll be 5 C, lots of snow, it'll be a great weekend to close down the season.”
