Brothers homer in same inning

-

The Naylor brothers turned National Siblings Day into quite a family affair.

Josh Naylor and his younger brother and Cleveland teammate, Bo, hit home runs in the same inning on Wednesday as the Guardians rallied for a 7-6 win in 10 innings over the Chicago White Sox.

Josh Naylor connected for a solo homer with one out in the fourth off Chicago's Erick Fedde, and Bo smashed a two-run shot to centre field two batters later.

It was the second time the Canadian duo has homered in the same inning, having done it on July 14 last season at Texas.

And if that wasn't enough, both Naylors delivered RBI hits in the 10th inning — Josh, 26, a game-tying double and Bo, 24, a game-winning single as the Guardians improved to 9-3, the club's best start since 2002.

“What a night for them,” said Guardians first-year manager Stephen Vogt. “I just can't imagine doing that with your brother. It is so cool.”

Canada has been drawn with Honduras, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic at this summer's CONCACAF U20 Championship.

The draw for the 12-country tournament, which runs July 18-Aug. 4 in Mexico, was held Thursday at CONCACAF headquarters in Miami.

“We're looking forward to heading into Mexico for the 2024 U20 Championship off the back of some positive performances in the qualifying run,” Canada coach Andrew Olivieri said in a statement. “With this new format to the competition, we knew there would be no easy groups and now we have the clarity we needed of the road ahead.”

The CONCACAF championship will send four teams to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

The young Canadians booked their ticket to the CONCACAF Championship in Port-of-Spain in February by winning their qualifying group with victories over Dominica (8-0), St. Vincent and the Grenadines (4-0) and host Trinidad and Tobago (3-0).

Group A is made up of the United States, Costa Rica, Cuba and Jamaica, while Group C features host Mexico, Panama, Guatemala and Haiti.

After round robin play, the two best teams from each group and two best third-place finishers will advance to the knockout rounds.

Anaheim Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg said he will retire at the end of the regular season.

The 33-year-old started his NHL career in Ottawa, but has been with the Ducks since 2013, serving as an alternate captain for the past five years.

Silfverberg has 158 goals and 196 assists in his tenure with the Ducks.

He is fifth in franchise history in goals, games played (769) and shots, while ranking third in short-handed goals.

Ottawa traded Silfverberg to Anaheim in July 2013 as part of a package for Bobby Ryan.
