Keeping up with design trends doesn't need to be expensive

- MELISSA HANK

When it comes to incorporating trends into your home, it doesn't take much to make some magic. A well-placed accessory here and a stealthy swap-out there can perk things up — without spending too much or committing to the look long term.

To help you navigate the possibilities, the experts at Canadian home improvement retailer Rona pinpointed decorating trends for 2024 as well as some key items for an affordable upgrade. (All items available at rona.ca.)

The trend: Old Brit charm

Think traditional, with natural materials and impeccable craftsmanship.

“Inspired by the Victorian era, old Brit charm embraces the beauty of the past, creating calm, romantic spaces that exude character, coziness, and nostalgia,” says a description from Rona. Look for dark woods, antique metals, Oriental motif rugs, textured wall coverings and bevelled mirrors.

Try: The Parrot Uncle modern gold chandelier ($195) or the Korhani Home Harlow grey polyester area rug ($399).

The trend: Quiet luxury

Also a major trend in fashion this past year, “quiet luxury” has come to mean good construction, understated elegance and discreet branding. Neutral colours create a relaxed vibe, while natural materials signal quality.

Try: A-street Prints Westport geometric wallpaper in coffee ($170.48) or the Gouchee Home Natura square linen throw pillow ($28.99).

The trend: Heritage

“A cross between traditional old Brit charm and modern, minimalistic quiet luxury, the heritage trend combines formal and ornate elements with simple, relaxed touches to create living spaces that are a mix of classic and current,” says Rona's description. Try: Smart Tiles Square Velden peel-and-stick backsplash tiles ($29.99 for a pack of two) or the Corliving Elewood midcentury green polyester accent chair ($579).

The trend: Dopamine decor

“Emitting a fun and joyful vibe, dopamine decor is all about creativity and vibrancy, infusing rooms with personality through a fusion of colours, shapes, patterns and textures,” says Rona's description. Here's where you can embrace bright colours. Fun touches include eclectic wallpaper as well as thrifted and repainted furniture.

Try: Faber Kezma glossy jade green ceramic wall tile ($7 per square foot) or Natural by Lifestyle Brands hand-painted pink/silver ceramic knobs ($45.99).
