Iginla to join Canada's U18 team

- Postmedia wire services

Hockey Canada completed its 25-player roster for the upcoming world men's under-18 hockey championship Tuesday with the addition of forward Tij Iginla.

The 17-year-old son of Hockey Hall of Fame inductee forward Jarome Iginla had 47 goals and 84 points in 64 games with the Western Hockey League's Kelowna Rockets this season.

Iginla is the No. 9-ranked North American skater on the NHL Central Scouting Bureau's final pre-draft rankings.

The U18 hockey championship starts Thursday and runs through May 5 in Espoo and Vantaa, Finland.

The Canadian Olympic Committee has become the first national Olympic committee in the world to join the Centre for Sport and Human Rights. The centre based in Switzerland launched in 2018 to promote human rights in sport and prevent violations of those rights.

Canada's Olympic Committee joins World Rowing and the international field hockey federation, as well as companies McDonald's and Airbnb, among organizations that say they're committed to both recognizing their human rights responsibilities in sport and ensuring responsible practices in sport sectors.

The U.S. Justice Department announced a US$138.7-million settlement Tuesday with more than 100 people who accused the FBI of grossly mishandling allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar in 2015 and 2016, a critical time gap that allowed the sports doctor to continue to prey on victims before his arrest.

When combined with other settlements, $1 billion now has been set aside by various organizations to compensate hundreds of women who said Nassar assaulted them under the guise of treatment for sports injuries while he worked at Michigan State University and also served as a team doctor at Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics. He's now serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes, including medal-winning Olympic gymnasts.

Caitlin Clark appears to be on the cusp of setting another record.

The most prolific scorer in NCAA Division I history and the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft will continue her association with Nike by signing a US$28-million contract that spans eight years and includes a signature shoe. The new deal would be the richest sponsorship contract for a women's basketball player. Clark, 22, will earn a $76,000 salary as a WNBA rookie.

U.S. college football is ready to put the signs away. The NCAA's playing rules oversight committee has approved the use of coach-to-player helmet communications in games for the 2024 season. The move follows a sign-stealing scandal that rocked the sport and hung over Michigan's championship run in 2023. Only one player for each team will be permitted to be in communication with coaches while on the field. A green dot on the back of the helmet will be used to identify that player.
