Sun's out, legs out!

-

The warmer weather is on its way, which means you'll soon be ready to kick off your long pants and stockings in favour of styles that let your legs breathe. Luckily, this season, just like last year, there is a range of options, whether you're a queen of the mini or maxi all the way. As designers like Miu Miu continue to show, you can even go completely pants-less if you prefer. From pleated skirts to 24/7 shorts, Rebecca Tay showcases five styles to set up for the season ahead.

DENIM — BUT MAKE IT LIGHT

It was only time before the denim maxi skirt returned to magazines and trend reports everywhere (because we didn't really have Feeds the last time they were in, remember?). This time, though, they're a little sleeker than the last. Go full length in a style with a high slit, or opt for a slightly lighter, shorter midi version like this stone-coloured one from Joe Fresh's Women+ line.

ON THE LADDER

Even if you mostly work from home these days, an asymmetrical skirt is a must: elegant enough if you have a last-minute interview or in-person meeting, yet not so corporate that you can't wear it out for dinner with friends. This Ladder pleated style by Babaton is made from a matte, drapey satin; team with trainers and a loose sweatshirt for a casual look, or mesh flats and fitted top for a more fashion-forward take.

LINEN LOVERS

Let's face it: denim cutoffs, while practical for weekends at the cottage spent gardening and swimming, tend to feel a little, er, sloppy for the city — which is why these days, we tend to favour linen instead. Relaxed and lightweight, a great pair like these pleated olive ones by Frame are just as comfortable and versatile as denim, but with the added benefit of looking smart with a blazer, a T-shirt or even a nice blouse.

THE LONG & SHORT OF IT

Shorts may feel intuitively wrong for the office, but that doesn't have to be the case: the trick is to look for a pair that covers most of your thigh, and that doesn't look silly with a pair of loafers or block-heeled pumps. This Sahaveny pair by Samsøe Samsøe is ideal, not only because of their professional-leaning pinstripes, but because you can pretty much swap your trusty black dress pants for these and be ready for anything, all season long.

EARN YOUR STRIPES

If you can't go past linen in the summer months, you might like this coral-striped wrap skirt. The print gives it a warm-weather, beachy vibe, and we think it's the perfect piece for Saturday errands and Sunday brunch. Try it with a plain white tee and sneakers, or a denim jacket and sandals for a look that's casual yet sophisticated. Club Monaco, clubmonaco.com | $189.50
