ROCKLAND REPRESENTED AT THE CANOE KAYAK PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ben Davies and Tyler Chenette won gold at the 2018 Provincial Sprint Canoe and Kayak Championships, held in Welland, Ontario on August 18 and 19.
“These past two weeks have been extremely demanding and rewarding for Ben,” said Ben Davies’ father Paul Davies. Davies also recently competed at the Eastern Ontario Division Championship at the Rideau Canoe Club, where he won two bronze medals and qualified for the Provincials in Welland.
Rockland’s Ben Davies competed in the provincial championships alongside three other fellow Petrie Island Canoe Club (PICC) members – Connor Chamoun, Tyler Chenette and Victor Savulescu. The four boys competed in the U15 C4 1000 meter race in Welland and finished in third place.
Davies and Chenette then competed in the U15 C2 1000 meters race, where they brought home the gold medal. The partners have competed in this race several times together during other competitions and were well prepared. The boys crossed the finish line 11 seconds ahead of the second kayak.
The Petrie Island Canoe Club sent 12 athletes to the provincial championships, ranging from 9 to 16 years old. This competition was Davies’ third provincial championship so far in his paddling career. Throughout the weekend in Welland, he competed in six races of 1000 meters each, along with the 200 meters mixed Dragon Boat race with other members of the club.
